How to Find and Apply to Internships Through UCAN

1) Register

a. Go to the UCAN login page—click Register.

b. When registering, you MUST use your Brown e-mail address.

c. You will see the message on-screen “Your registration has been received. An email will shortly be sent to your email to verify validity of your email address.”

d. Go to your Brown email account, open the message that noreply@symplicity.com has sent, and click on the link to verify your email address.

e. VERY IMPORTANT—Once your registration has been okayed by UCAN staff (this can take 24 hours), you will be sent an email with your password. Once you have this password, return to the site and log in.

f. Once you’ve logged in, change your password to something only you know.

2) Upload your Documents

a. NOTE – You CAN search for internships before you have uploaded a resume and cover letters.

b. Once logged into your account, click on Documents, then Add New.

c. Label and load as many documents as you need. REMINDER—you should have a separate cover letter for each organization or internship you apply to, EVEN if the employer does not specify that a cover letter is required. (IF there is space ONLY for a resume, you can create your cover letter, ADD a page break, then add your resume into the same document.)

d. RECOMMENDATION—create your cover letters in Microsoft Word before you log in (do NOT use the text editor built into the online system).

3) Search for Internships

a. Click on Internships.

b. Click on Advanced Search (Why? Because the regular search does not allow you to specify a geographic location.)
c. Favorites—You can add any internship to your list of Favorites (in the list of internships, click on icon under Options).

d. Search Agents—System will automatically send you emails when new internships matching your pre-set criteria arrive.

     i. Conduct an Advanced Search, clicking in the Save As box and giving your Search Agent a name (e.g. “Publishing”).

ii. After you have submitted your Advanced Search, click on Search Agent and Schedule how often you want that agent to run.

4) Apply to Internships

a. To apply to any particular internship, you will need to have uploaded a resume and any other document which that internship requires.

b. From within an internship listing, select the resume you wish to send, along with any other required documents, and click on Submit. It’s that simple.
