The Awards

Application Form

The Mission:
To provide financial assistance to students pursuing unpaid or low-paying internships with the result that the Brown educational experience is continually enhanced through student initiatives and experiential learning outside of, but not unrelated to, the classroom.

The Funding:
Funding is derived from special endowments established by alumni and parents, employer gifts, and support from the Office of Financial Aid. There are currently eight sources of internship funding available to students at Brown. This funding allows for approximately 60 awards each year.

Funding Sources:
Aided Internship Award
Goldman Sachs & Company Award
Peter G. and Paul G. Hanoian Internship Award
Barrett Hazeltine Award
Timory Hyde Class of 1997 Memorabubble Award
May Company Award
Andrea Rosenthal Memorial Award
Richard Smoke Internship Award*

The Role of Career Services:
As we are keenly aware of the need for students to explore career options and to gain professional experience before they graduate from Brown, Career Services devotes considerable resources each year in administering seven of the above funding sources as the Brown Internship Award Program (BIAP). This includes establishing application policies and procedures, organizing application review committees, determining recipients and award amounts, facilitating the disbursement of awards to students, as well as general stewardship and communication with donors.

*The Richard Smoke Internship Award, although included in BIAP information and marketing materials, is administered by The Watson Institute for International Studies, the Office of International Programs, and the Swearer Center for Public Service.

The Application & Selection Process:
Students may apply to all the award programs but are eligible to receive only one award. Students selected for an Aided Internship Award, however, may be eligible to receive funding from one additional award if the experience they are pursuing requires extra support and is deemed by the review committee to be of the highest merit.

The application deadline for all awards is March 16th, 2001. At the beginning of the spring semester, a review committee is established for each award. Each committee is comprised of one faculty member, a member of the Career Services staff, and one additional professional staff member from the Brown Community, usually a dean or director. The committee members review the applications independently during the last week of March and then convene as a group the following week to finalize their selections. All BIAP applicants are informed about review committee decisions by mid April and awards are issued to recipients in the form of a check (except for AIP awards) by early May. All BIAP recipients are required to write a letter of thanks to the specific donor/s of their award and to submit a reflective essay to Career Services at the conclusion of their internship.

All awards are made based on the extent to which the experience is likely to integrate professional and academic development, the likelihood that the experience will promote achievement of the student's ultimate career goals, and associated costs, i.e., travel, food and housing.
